What tree and shrub lighting involves
We light the plants in your front yard. That means trunks and limbs wrapped for a clean look, nets laid over hedges, and strands draped on evergreens and cedars.
Everything runs on outdoor-rated cords to a timer, so the yard switches on and off with the house.
If you have bins of lights in the garage, we will check them and hang the ones that work. If they are worn out or not rated for outdoors, we can supply lights instead. You can book this job by itself. There is no program and no yearly plan to join. If you only want a front tree or a hedge done, that is fine with us.
Problems this fixes
These are the problems that bring people to us.
- A big front tree you can't reach from a ladder
- Lights tangled through the branches every year
- Cords running across the lawn and walkway
- A dark yard next to a well-lit house
- Hedges that look patchy when lit
- A dead strand buried in the middle of a tree
We plan the cord route before we start so it stays off your walkway where we can. Nets give hedges even coverage where loose strands look patchy. If a strand has died inside a tree, repair can be booked on its own, even on lights someone else hung.
How the job is done
Wrapping and draping are different methods. Bare trunks and limbs look best wrapped closely. Evergreens and cedars look better with strands draped through the branches from the top down. Hedges get nets.
We use clips only, never nails or staples. The strands sit loosely and come off in January. Wrapping a tree for a season does not hurt it. Leaving lights on a growing limb all year is what causes damage.
The lights connect to an outdoor plug through outdoor-rated cord and a timer. If your yard is a long way from a plug, we will tell you how the cords would run before you book. Removal in January can be booked alone too.
What affects cost and time
Most yards take an hour or two on top of the house lights. Large trees take longer. A yard-only job is shorter because there is no roofline to do.
The price depends on these things.
- The size and number of trees and shrubs
- How they are lit, whether wrapped, draped or netted
- How far they are from an outdoor plug
- Whether you use your own lights or want ours supplied
How high we can go on a tree depends on the tree, where a ladder can stand safely and what is under it. Send a photo and we will say what is possible. Roof work is moved when it is slick or windy, so the house part of the job may shift on a wet day.
